On the morning of May 11, 2024, the historic Patriarchal Cathedral Church of St. George stood as a magnificent venue, witnessing yet another Baptism ceremony full of tradition, faith and love. The Dimizas family from the heart of Greece, Athens, had come to Istanbul for the baptism of their beloved daughter Evgenia, together with 66 close friends and family members. While dear director Harutyun Gevorgyan recorded the video footage of this special day, I, as a photographer, had the privilege of capturing the essence and emotions of these unforgettable moments.
Ceremony A Blend of Tradition and Respect
When my dear Harutyun and I arrived at the Greek Patriarchal Church of Fener, I was struck by the peaceful and sacred atmosphere of this place, which we were familiar with because we had shot there before. The finely crafted frescoes and the gentle glow of the candles were the perfect backdrop for Evgenia's baptism. At exactly 12 o'clock the baptism ceremony began in the Patriarchal Church of St. George. Inside this sacred space, the prayers of the priests and the spiritual symphony echoed through the historical textures.
With my camera, I captured meaningful moments: Evgenia, in a delicate white baptismal gown, looking angelic and mischievous as she was held by her godfather. The baptismal ritual with holy water and oil was an epic scene. The joy and devotion on the faces of the Dimizas family was beautifully framed in every frame.
Journey of Faith and Family
One of the most joyful and touching moments was capturing the interaction between Evgenia and her Godfather. Their faces, full of pride, love and emotion, spoke of family ties and the transmission of faith through generations. The mix of family and close friends added to the warmth and intimacy of the ceremony. The presence of the guests at the ceremony showed how important this milestone in Evgenia's life was.
Celebration at Ciragan Palace
Following the christening ceremony, the celebrations moved to the magnificent Çırağan Palace at 3 pm. The magnificent view of the Bosphorus and the historic fabric of the palace provided a breathtaking setting for the Baptism dinner. The Dimizas family had meticulously planned every detail to give their guests an unforgettable experience. Each guest even received a gift package to commemorate this special day.
The banquet hall was decorated with elegant floral arrangements, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Laughter, clinking glasses and cheerful conversations created a lively and enthusiastic gathering. I caught a glimpse of the guests mingling, the joy on their faces and the celebration of Evgenia's special day.
A Day to Remember
As the event drew to a close, I reflected on the emotions and moments I had captured. It was a day full of tradition, family and joy, beginning with the sacred ceremony at the Patriarchal Church of St. George and continuing with the joyous celebration at the Ciragan Palace. With my camera, I created a documentary photographic story that would forever capture the love and happiness surrounding Evgenia's baptism, a story that the Dimizas family would keep for years to come.
This assignment was not just about taking pictures; it was about witnessing and documenting a family's deep-rooted traditions and expressions of faith and love. It was a great honor to be part of Evgenia's special day and to document this important event in her life.
